BRIEF: Illustrate and format a 32-page children's picture book called "What Would Grammy Say?" containing 16 rhymes about manners. Work with the author, Kathy Peck Nestell, to develop concepts and character designs.
SOLUTION: I first conducted research relevant to the story’s genre and current trends in children’s literature to generate illustration concepts and aesthetics. I also discussed various ideas with the author, who wanted the book to appear playful, humorous, and bold.
I then produced several rounds of character designs and sketches which were finalized and approved through author feedback. I also created a vibrant color palette to help maintain visual consistency across each rhyme and spread.
I illustrated all 32 pages of the story, in addition to the covers, in full-color using pencil and watercolor brushes in Procreate, and also arranged the layout in InDesign. I designed and formatted all book typography in Illustrator and InDesign, and prepared the files for printing.
The book was published by Palmetto Publishing on May 12, 2025 (Available in both paperback and hardcover on Amazon and Barnes & Noble).
